Yoga for weight loss
October 5th, 2008While the debates continue, there is absolutely every reason to consider a yoga program, geared to your abilities at this moment, as part of weight loss strategies. The argument comes primary from those that do not know all that Yoga can be. First, let me share this. We all could benefit from more flexibility…that is one of the big differences between Yoga and other forms of exercise. Most other approaches, using machines, walking, running and even rowing, contributes to the “contraction” of myofascial tissues post exercise. This, besides removal of lactate and other waster products is the rationale behind stretching or a cool down after exercise. This aids in you being free from soreness or stiffness that discourages more training the next day.
I have clearly outlined in past writings and will say it again, the best approach to exercise for weight loss is every day, on average 3 times a day, in shorter sessions (about equal time to each session, 10 minutes for beginners building up to 3-20 minute sessions. So, one “bout” of exercise could be 20 min of Yoga…or there can be 10 minutes each session. Either way, it is “balance training”, “flexibility training”, can be strength training…and can be endurance training, with the right education and the progressive increase in effort. Yoga should not be painful or even really uncomfortable. Working toward…”your edge” is the goal…and you will be pleased with the results.
